Alghero Centro Storico
Excursion Alghero
Alghero was founded in the 12th century by the Doria dynasty from Genoa. The historical centre of the city, characterised by its Catalan/Aragonese architecture, is protected by ancient city walls and towers built around 1300 to protect the city from attack by sea.
The guided tour starts at the port and, having passed through Piazza Civica, pays a visit to the Cathedral of Santa Maria. The oldest section of the cathedral was built in 1562 in late Catalan Gothic style, and the structure was eventually completed in 1730.
We then continue on, through the Piazza del Teatro, to the beautiful Church of San Francesco, with its adjacent monastery and cloister. Built in the second half of the 14th century, it harmoniously combines both Gothic and Renaissance forms.
When we pass through the Fort of la Maddalena, we will visit the medieval towers and walls, which afford breathtaking views of the bay of Alghero.
The visit comes to a close on the panoramic terrace of the old part of the city walls, at the Magellano bastions, where you will be given the opportunity to sample some fine local foods.
